Often in exploration and
production geophysics, results are presented as maps or displays for people to
make decisions. The assessments are
visual and often depend on the color choice or drafting ability of the
presenting group. The approach at
Quantum Earth is to take the same underlying data and make measurements on it,
determining both the quantity and the associated error bars.
The procedures employed
are straightforward. They are the sorts
of things that are easy to explain and to duplicate. Any senior scientist running this sort of
software should arrive at statistically identical numbers. Quantum Earth has a focus on the numbers,
perhaps Kelvin said it best:
When you can
measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know
something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it
in numbers, your knowledge of it is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind; it may
be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts,
advanced it to the stage of science.
Sir William Thompson, Lord Kelvin (1824-1907)
